‘Material’ approaches real estate in a collection of wry meditations within the recess of sprawling streets through to its periphery. In the tonal quality of the black and white film the core materials of our built-up landscape are broken down, neutralising the viewer’s perception and creating sculptural and uncanny instances of the ordinary. As Dale skirts a didactic aesthetic using form and ambiguity, he nudges intrigue for further investigation, and within the book’s sequence, builds it into something like poetic prose.
